NAAG Announces Top Ten Consumer Complaint List

Top Ten Consumer Complaints

The National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) announced its list of the Top 10 consumer complaints for 2005. While automobiles topped the list, as it has for 12 out of the past 13 years, and home repair/construction stayed in the second spot, an important change was the third and fourth spots. Complaints regarding Internet goods and services rose from the fourth spot to third spot, and Telecommunications slamming and cramming complaints fell one spot to number four. Also on the list were complaints relating to telemarketing "do not call" allegations as well as sweepstakes and prize promotions. One should expect increased regulatory scrutiny in these areas given the significant number of consumer complaints reported.

NAAG reports that the results are based on an informal nationwide survey conducted by it. Here are the results:

1) Automobile/Car Rental

2) Home Repair/Construction

3) Internet Goods and Services

4) Telecommunications slamming/cramming

5) Credit Reporting

6) Retail Sales

7) Telemarketing Do-Not-Call

8) Debt Collection

9) Contests, Sweepstakes, and Prize Promotions

10) Furniture, Appliances, and Home Furnishings
