More Supplier Scrutiny

Today’s follow up NY Times Story “2 Firms Tied to Phone Lists Will Review Their Policies” on direct marketing suppliers involved in supporting fraudulent marketers highlights the current regulatory quagmire suppliers find themselves in. InfoUSA’s President’s defense that: “My people aren’t investigators, they’re marketers, and it’s unfair to expect them to know everything about who is buying from us and every database that is listed on our Web site” illustrates the difficulty in forcing suppliers to be regulators. Sunday’s article appears to be drawing much attention, with Presidential candidate Barack Obama now calling for an investigation of InfoUSA. InfoUSA’s defense that “if the company was breaking any laws, it would have been investigated by the Federal Trade Commission” may ultimately prove prophetic.
