On December 1, 2009, the FTC's newly revised Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising (http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2009/10/endorest.shtm) went into effect. The Guides modify the existing obligations of advertisers regarding endorsements and testimonials, and also add new obligations specifically for online commenters about products.
Under the FTC's Guides, bloggers and even those using Twitter and Facebook to discuss products and services may be held to be "endorsers," even if they are not paid by the advertiser. If they are endorsers, bloggers and other social media users must disclose the relationship when they discuss the products.
On December 9, 2009 at 1:30 ET, Andrew B. Lustigman will join with Melanie Notkin, founder of SavvyAuntie (www.savvyauntie.com), to present a free, 1-hour Webinar for bloggers and other social media users on the new FTC Guides. During the Webinar, participants will learn about the Guides and best practices to comply with them, including:
